Panda Internet Security 2009 BETA

We've recently released the new Panda Internet Security 2009 to public beta. This is the first product to use "scanning from the cloud" technology based on Panda's Collective Intelligence [PDF] as the first line of defense against new malware.

This new approach to security allows us to detect new malware faster by not having to rely on traditional antivirus signatures, with a much lesser resource impact on each PC thanks to the use of white-listing technologies to improve scanning efficiency.

Users of Panda Internet Security 2009 become part of the Collective Intelligence community and act as "sensors" which provide telemetry to determine, thanks to correlation and statistical algorithms, which malware is really prevalent and affecting users worldwide.

In addition to this new layer of security, which encompasses all previous ones, our products continue having traditional signatures, advanced heuristics, TruPrevent behavioral analysis and blocking, intrusion prevention and other protection techniques found in previous versions.

You can sign up for the beta at http://www.pandasecurity.com/homeusers/downloads/beta/.

UPDATE: The beta period has finished. You can now download your version of Panda 2009 from http://www.pandasecurity.com.

Hi Pedro, i´m testing the new IS09 beta, and i´m pleased with the new interface, visuals and protection, despite it´s resource comsumption i have a doubt about the pav.sig signature file, regarding what you´re saying about "scanning from the cloud".

I´ve noticed that the pav.sig included in the pis09 it´s about 47 Mb, almost ten Mb less than actual pav.sig, but still heavy don´t you think?, how it´s this going to evolve in the future?, what about only "in the wild" threats locally, rest online?, pls give me some of your thoughs.

Thanks in advance.

Marcelo

Yes Marcelo, this is the idea, to continue reducing local resource consumption and only have local signatures for truly in-the-wild prevalent malware. The rest is queried online.

Panda Antivirus + Firewall 2009 is not in BETA (at least available in the web site). But I would like to give some suggestions:

- Just two (2) process's one in memory one in the "System" and other for the "User". Other antivirus like at least Kaspersky 2009 and ESET already do this, and effectively it makes the computer much more quick to bot up and to use... and yes with all types of the protections (anti-malware, firewall, antispam, etc.).

- A follow up page of submitted files trough e-mail and the program. The page should be linked to the e-mail. (I've seen this in Avira, when sending suspected files). This would be useful to track what is happening to the submitted file.

hi,

nice gui, good improvement on truprevent, it work fine on new malwares.

Cheers

PS: /Off topic

Good luck for the sunday match(lol)

The final result is Italy 4 Spain 0

Thanks for the suggestions joao and lucass. We're already working on what you're saying joao. Look for something in this respect towards the end of the year or beginning of 2009.

Lucass, only two words for you: "YOU WISH !" :)

Posted by Pedro Bustamante at 21 June 08 9:43 PM

Hi pedro,

on IS 2009 truprevent block a new malware but don't move it on quarantine, if i remember correctly the version 2008 block the new malware and move it on quarantine, it's a normal behaviour?

Ah, the firewall of 2008 have problem with the synchronization clock, if the firewall is active the synchronization don't work because svchost.exe is a protected process on IS 2008

(it work on the UDP protocol, remote and local port 123).

Cheers

Can you please send the full details including how to reproduce it to beta@pandasecurity.com lucass.

Btw,...YIHAAAAAA !!!!  (4-2)

Posted by Pedro Bustamante at 23 June 08 10:33 AM

yesss, 4:2 :-) Great game.

I love the "Panda AVPro 2009".

With the "IS2009" i have great problems with my Vista 64bit.

It don't start after i install "IS2009"

pedro, after 89 years.......

Ok, i sent the email.

Ciao

Posted by lucass at 23 June 08 4:05 PM

IS2k9 tprevent is much better than is2k8 .

I have send a email to beta@pandasecurity.com containing details of few bugs and suggestion, but no reply from you guys.

Posted by Buddee at 24 June 08 6:50 AM

yes the Beta Center is this year a bit slowly ;-)

Posted by kev at 25 June 08 8:34 AM

please answer the e-mails, I have already sent a number of consultations and I don´t answer it.

Posted by Nicolas Aimetta at 4 July 08 6:30 PM

Nicolas and all, normally our beta team does not answer submitted bugs unless they need more details. They're working hard to reproduce and fix the problems you find for the benefit of all users. So even though not all of you might get an answer, rest assured that they're working on fixing the problems for the release version.

Posted by Pedro Bustamante at 5 July 08 1:55 AM

Pedro, in the past responded betas "saying thank you for contact with the beta program we will analyze your query, as soon get our response" and that with the change in time note.

Posted by Nicolás Aimetta at 5 July 08 4:35 PM

I'll talk to them to make sure they continue doing that Nicolas.

How mouch memory take Panda IS 2009 when everything is running? Firewall, Antivirus, TruPrevent etc.

I hope it will take mouch lesser then IS 2008 :D

Posted by Jonte at 6 July 08 11:23 AM

Yes Jonte, much improved over the 2008 version. One of the main benefits of Collective Intelligence is that by scanning from the cloud we can reduce the amount of resources needed on each PC. In addition the use of white-listing technologies allows us to improve the speed of scanning, thereby taking up less resources as well.

Posted by Pedro Bustamante at 6 July 08 10:22 PM

I´m testing the new Panda IS Beta version. And it´s very good. Mouch faster scan! And the new interface is very nice!! :D

By the way, when will you publish Panda IS 2009?

Jonte!

Posted by Jonte at 12 July 08 5:09 PM

Yep interface is very nice, but it will look awesome if a progress bar with scan details in scan tab instead of openning a new windows (same as is2008 have before)

Posted by Buddee at 14 July 08 7:30 AM

when an undeletable or unmoveable Virus is detected, why dont suffice to Start the computer in Safe mode to delete or move the virus?

Jonte

Posted by Jonte at 18 July 08 12:00 PM

It really depends on the malware type. There's certain samples which infect with boot or MBR rootkits which you cannot get rid of while active.

Posted by Pedro Bustamante at 18 July 08 12:47 PM

When will you publish Panda 2009 products?

Posted by Sam at 18 July 08 3:52 PM

i wish that panda 2009 products should have boot time scanner like Avast have for cleaning virus before windows start.

Posted by Buddee at 21 July 08 5:47 AM

Pedro,

The version 2009 should have an option to incapacitate the first screen of AV in the initialization.

Thankful.

Posted by Cliceu at 22 July 08 11:20 PM

Sam, we'll publish the final version once the beta process is finished and we've finetuned all rough edges. We're now in Beta3 and it looks pretty good btw.

Buddee, it does have this funcionality transparently.

Thanks for the comment Cliceu, we'll take this as a suggestion for future versions.

Posted by Pedro Bustamante at 23 July 08 5:54 PM

did panda 2009 products send data to internet(your server) during manual scan for each file.?

Posted by buddee at 29 July 08 8:50 AM

When we can expect Beta4 or the Beta3 is the last beta?

Posted by User at 29 July 08 5:00 PM

Yes it queries against Collective Intelligence for the files it does not detect locally. But it doesn't do it for each file you scan. No personal information is sent obviously. With this you're ensured that you're checking files against the very latest and most complete malware knowledge from PandaLabs.

Regarding the different versions, Beta3 is the last beta version before Candidate Release.

Posted by Pedro Bustamante at 31 July 08 10:24 AM

Hi, I am using Panda since the early 2005 and 2006 version. I would like to ask yous guys how the update process will work on new 2009 realase? On 2008 IS it takes ages on my system to udate (and it slows down computer - you cant really browse internet when panda is updating). Why would you not go for incremental updates like in free AVG - instead of downloadin the whole new pav.sig every single time which is getting bigger and bigger?

Thats just my comment:)

Thanks a lot

Tom

Posted by Tom at 5 August 08 5:54 PM

Today my fathers Panda detected a Suspicious virus.

Panda blocked it. It did´nt put it to quarantine, just blocked it. 10 hourse later, Panda detected that file as "BCK/Agent.JOO" Did Panda send the suspicious file automaticly?

Very fast response time =)

Posted by Jonte at 5 August 08 10:35 PM

Please add all trj/wmadownloaders.

Get the virus all the time!!!

How does the new IS 2009 deal with rogue-antimalware both in XP and VIsta. Obviously Vista has UAC which helps but I am still getting lots of customer (who have IS 2008 running) and they still get caught out by the rogue stuff (i.e. a fake "your infected pop-up appears and tricks them into installing the rubbish".

New GUI looks much much better. Well done!

Posted by systemsmb at 17 August 08 8:23 PM

no doubt panda prodcuts are the best for their proactive defense, no in this version panda team has imporved the heurisitic scan too. great job ,panda team :D

Posted by buddee at 20 August 08 9:32 AM

Sorry for the late replies guys, I was out on vacation for a few days. I'll try to summarize the latest comments here:

* Regarding incremental updates in 2009 vs 2008, we've always had incremental updates. Regarding improvements, on one hand the signature file has been optimized thanks to Collective Intelligence and on the other hand the update process has also been improved to become less intrusive. You should see a big improvement here Tom.

* Jonte, regarding the signature of "BCK/Agent.JOO", as a matter of fact this might have been due to the suspicious detection. Thanks to Collective Intelligence we can (1) prioritize the most important suspicious detections and (2) create signatures much faster for these. Also in the product there's a setting for sending suspicious files automatically or not. You can tweak this.

* Re: Trj/WMADownloaders, we've seen this as a problem lately. Even though the "downloaded malware" is detected, the "downloader" itself is not, and it keeps in trying to download the malware component, which is detected over and over as it tries to re-download every time. Don't worry, (a) we're detecting it and (b) you're not getting infected.

* Systemsmb re: rogue-antispyware infections. As a matter of fact this is the most prevalent type of malware in the last few months. In the last couple of weeks we released some new generic signatures for these (Virtumonde, AntivirusXP, etc.) which should reduce this problem drastically.

* Re: new heuristics buddee, as a matter of fact, not only for malware but also new heuristics for identity protection (phishing sites, banking trojans, etc.) is new in the 2009 versions.

Also thanks to the rest of you for the good comments about the 2009 products. It's very nice to see the positive feedback from some many people here and in the beta period.

Hi,

can u tell us when the finals of the 2009 version are come on to download? in the beta section is nothing more to download so i think, the final is not far away :-D or? greez chris

Soon enough ;)

Posted by Pedro Bustamante at 21 August 08 1:43 PM

Aha. nice answer. is it such a problem to say a date? is it possible at 25.08? i received a automail from panda with this date cause a have a new licence for panda, and so i get such newsletters

greez

Posted by Chris at 22 August 08 11:47 PM

Thanks for the reply. I am glad to hear you guys are tackling the rogue-antispyware stuff. So many of my customers get caught out by them.

Do you know how Panda will deal with rogue-anitspyware using these new signatures? Can it prevent them from being initially installed in the first place or do I just need to concentrate on educating my clients? They are a pain to remove and it can take a lot of time not to mention money.

Posted by Systemsmb at 23 August 08 1:38 PM

äh hello? where is my last post? will it be cencored? cool.

can no one tell me the release date of panda 2009? before 2 weeks i get an e-mail from panda with the date 25.08. for release. can anyone tell me the real release date??? remember there are a lot of other AV producers! i am not bound on panda if the informations are so low.

cheers

Posted by Chris at 27 August 08 2:29 AM

No censoring here Chris :)

In fact 2009 will be officially released today!

Re: rogue signatures Systemsmb, yesterday we released some new generic sigs for these. Please try them out and give us some feedback.

Posted by Pedro Bustamante at 27 August 08 10:09 AM

hi

i am very happy to read this. i am sure panda with all the included news are very fine in detection of malware etc.

i think later the day the relase will come. can u tell me the download chances? on offical site? or otherwhere? or can i downlaod it today if i log in with my licence on the user downloads? oh yeah so many questions :-D

cheers chris

Hi!

I was testing Panda IS 2009 Beta 3 & Beta 4. I reported bugs, but you didn't fixed most of them. Now I tried final version, and there are still the same bugs, so I don't know why I even sending bug reports.

1. Scandisk on Windows XP SP2 boot didn't start if Panda IS 2009 Beta3 or 4 was installed and it's still not working in final version.

2. PerfectDisk 2008 boot time defrag still does not working because some drivers conflict.

3. The update event is still not logged in to report.

4. There was more bugs, but after I saw those three I uninstaled Panda IS 2009 immediately ...

I am quite disappointed you didn't fix those bugs. I reported those bugs in beta 3 & 4 and you didn't do nothing. Specially first two bugs are critical for me.

Now I must find some other protection or use PIS 2008. I hope that PIS 2010 will work better next year.

Best Regards

1 question, does panda 2009 line of products proactively detects keyloggers ?

Posted by Buddee at 28 August 08 4:45 PM

Can anyone tell me why IS2009 will not install on Vista? Keeps sticking on previous failed installation detected message and although the previous version has been removed with uninstaller supplied by Panda there is no way past the annoying message. With Windows XP no problems whatsoever on installing.

I have tried other IS programmes on Vista and there is no problem, just Panda. Pity to pay for 3 licences if it cannot be used on the Vista computer.

Thanks

Karl

Posted by Karl at 4 September 08 5:45 PM

Karl, we've updated the uninstaller recently. Please contact your local Panda Tech Support to get it.

Posted by Pedro Bustamante at 5 September 08 11:05 AM

Regarding the problems by "User", sorry for the late reply. Here's the breakdown:

* Scandisk under WinXP SP2. This is a non-critical bug which is fixed by installing XP SP3.

* PerfectDisk 2008 boot time defrag. Still studying this issue. Regardless it is classified as a non-critical issue.

* Update event still not logged to the report. This has been solved in the release version.

Just purchased 'Internet Security 2009' on disc have had two attempts at installing it ( currently have Panda 'Antivirus+ Firewall 2008' prior to which I had Panda Antivirus 2006.

The first time it would not completely remove the previous installation and completely screwwed up my system. I had to do a 'System restore' before I could re-install Panda 2008.

I then recieved a fix from 'Pillpgore' via the Panda Security Forum.

I followed all the steps but could not remove tyhe 'PAV.SIG' file said 'access denied'

Tried installing 'Internet Security 2009' again with similar results making it necessary to do a 'system restore again.

So I still only have Antivirus+ Firewall 2008 after having paid £40.00 for Internet security 2009.

Surely it should not be this difficult?  can anyone help? I have been very pleased with Panda for the last 3 years or so but am very disenchanted with these latest problems!

Heiya John,

try the following generic uninstaller:

http://research.pandasecurity.com/blogs/images/uninstaller/Generic_Uninstaller.exe

After it has done its thing, reboot and try to install your 2009 copy.

Pedro, Man am I glad I found this site, and had the patience to scroll all the way down to the last comment.  20 times I have restarted my computer.  Every time the same message, traces detected....traces will be removed....restart, and bingo, same thing.  Now I just ran the generic uninstaller.  If you do not hear from me again, I am deeply grateful.  I was about to go mad.  P

Hi Pedro,

unfortunately, I am back.  The generic uninstaller did not work.  This makes 21 times now.

I had IS 2008, it expired two weeks ago.  Today I paid for a renewal.  Once the download was complete it said, "you must remove prior versions..." so I did.  Now I have been trying for several hours to get Panda up, and it refuses to budge from that screen "Failed Installation Detected.  Traces of a former ....again and again and again.

Please help me!

Phillip

Dear Pedro,

I am very disappointed in Panda.  Right now I am on hold with Mastercard to try and recall my 175€ payment for Panda Internet Security 2009.

I wrote you earlier this week, but I neither got an answer nor saw my comments posted.

I have been trying for over a week now to get it installed.  I have Windows Vista and just keep getting the same error message every time.

Traces of ealier version detected, they will now be removed, restart then relaunch.  So I do, and it does not work.

I tried your generic uninstaller several times.  It does not work.

I posted several requests on the Panda tech support site, no answer.

I called every number given by Panda, no answer.

What kind of a company is this?

I am going to try to block or re-claim my payment. Defective products should not be sold to helpless customers who then get no help and no response.

Phillip
